My name is Carmen and I was accepted in to the Master’s program for Illustration with an emphasis on Comics; a program I managed to get in by what feels like sheer luck! I recently received my BA in Psychology, you see, and the only official art classes I have ever taken was a semester of Studio Art right after I graduated high school (because, why would I take an art class in high school when I could take band and be exempt from taking PE?) and a couple classes in BA program for Game Arts and Development, that I didn’t finish, a few years ago, online, though the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. As such, I am mostly self-taught through hours of online tutorials I’ve found through DA or YouTube.com.
I am greatly influenced by Japanese Comic styles (manga), admittedly, but always strive to explore different styles of illustration and art, as well as different mediums in which to create them. In that way I guess you could say I am a bit of a “renaissance” woman, in that I know a little about different art practices and techniques, but I am not a master of any of them. My ultimate goal is to eventually get good enough to start my own graphic novel, and/or web comic that I can comfortably maintain once I retire.
